List of food a diabetic can eat

Diabetes mellitus is a disease characterized by persistent hyperglycemia it is a metabolic disease caused due to the imbalance in the blood sugar level that requires medical diagnosis, treatment and immediate controlling with some precautions.

The primary reason for categorizing food into six different groups is that foods vary in their carbohydrate, protein, fat, and calorie content. In our diet, bread is essential source of carbohydrates which provides energy, vitamins, minerals and fibers which help in maintaining blood sugar levels. Others sources are Beans, oats, barley and peas. As a whole grain takes longer time to digests these are among the wisest choice. Vegetable

Each vegetable serving contains about five grams of carbohydrate, two grams of protein, and twenty-five calories on an average. Cabbage, carrot, Fenugreek leaves, spinach, bitter melon are best examples.

Fruit

Most of the fruits provide fifteen grams of carbohydrate and sixty calories. Fruit juices are less preferred as the fiber contained is not utilized and hence glucose level is high. Examples apple, grapes, oranges, papaya are best among fruits.

Meat

Meat and substitutes usually contains seven grams of protein. You are preferably advised to consume more lean and medium-fat meat, poultry, and fish in your meal plan.

Taken regularly, herbs that contain powerful antioxidants can help reduce inflammation, which may lead to the development of type2 diabetes and is also implicated in heart disease, kidney problems, and other life threatening conditions.

Type 1: This form is known as insulin dependent diabetes because in this form the diabetic person needs to have daily injections of insulin.

Type 2: This form is known as noninsulin-dependent. As it is slow onset and because it can usually be controlled with diet and oral medication.

Individuals who are at high risk of developing diabetes mellitus include people who:

- Are obese (more than 20% above their ideal body weight) 
- Have a relative with diabetes mellitus 
- Belong to a high-risk ethnic population (African-American, Native American,  
   Hispanic, or Native Hawaiian) 
- Have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes or have delivered a baby 
   weighing more than 9 lbs (4 kg) 
- Have high blood pressure (140/90 mmHg or above) 
- Have a high density lipoprotein cholesterol level less than or equal to 35 mg/dL 
   and/or a triglyceride level greater than or equal to 250 mg/dL 
- Have had impaired glucose tolerance or impaired fasting glucose on previous    testing.

Urine tests can also detect ketones and protein in the urine which may help diagnose diabetes and assess how well the kidneys are functioning.
