Diabetes mellitus is a disease characterized by persistent hyperglycemia it is a metabolic disease caused due to the imbalance in the blood sugar level that requires medical diagnosis, treatment and immediate controlling with some precautions.

The primary reason for categorizing food into six different groups is that foods vary in their carbohydrate, protein, fat, and calorie content. In our diet, bread is essential source of carbohydrates which provides energy, vitamins, minerals and fibers which help in maintaining blood sugar levels. Others sources are Beans, oats, barley and peas. As a whole grain takes longer time to digests these are among the wisest choice. Avoid Potatoes, Corn and Pasta as these are very rich in carbohydrates.

Starch/Bread List

Starch/Bread on an average contains fifteen grams of carbohydrate, three grams of protein, a trace of fat, and eighty calories. Wheat bread, whole grain, pasta, cereals are best examples.

Vegetable

Each vegetable serving contains about five grams of carbohydrate, two grams of protein, and twenty-five calories on an average. Cabbage, carrot, Fenugreek leaves, spinach, bitter melon are best examples.

Fruit

Most of the fruits provide fifteen grams of carbohydrate and sixty calories. Fruit juices are less preferred as the fiber contained is not utilized and hence glucose level is high. Examples apple, grapes, oranges, papaya are best among fruits.

Meat

Meat and substitutes usually contains seven grams of protein. You are preferably advised to consume more lean and medium-fat meat, poultry, and fish in your meal plan.

Herbs

Taken regularly, herbs that contain powerful antioxidants can help reduce inflammation, which may lead to the development of type2 diabetes and is also implicated in heart disease, kidney problems, and other life threatening conditions.

Hence, being a vast choice of food in our day to day life we choose the best combination of minerals, vitamins, protein, carbohydrate and fats to regulate the effect of diabetes. Hence, it is important to find out what to eat and what not to eat for diabetes. Discuss taking herbs with your doctor and make sure to monitor your blood sugar levels regularly, when you factor herbs into your new active lifestyle and smart eating plan, you strengthen organ systems weakened by type 2 diabetes – and you just might be able to avoid taking blood sugar-lowering drugs. Here are some that show promise.

What causes diabetes? It is insulin and it is produced by beta cells in pancreas. You see, your body needs a certain amount of sugar to function properly, and it needs to be absorbed by your cells to give you energy – which is where the insulin comes in. The insulin assures your body cells absorb the sugar from your blood. When the amount of insulin produced in pancreas is not enough to absorb sugar in blood or more complicated its secretion stops this type of disorder in the human body is called diabetes in medical terms.

Diabetes can be further categories on the basis of body‘s incapability of not producing Insulin. Type 1: This form is known as insulin dependent diabetes because in this form the diabetic person needs to have daily injections of insulin. Type 2: This form is known as noninsulin-dependent. As it is slow onset and because it can usually be controlled with diet and oral medication.

Let’s have glance on the food habits preferred:

Food rich in fat content is necessary but in a very moderate quantity. Persons suffering from diabetes should avoid extra toppings on processed food. Chocolates and other desserts with a controlled fat size and of sugar free option can be consumed.

Fruits are rich in carbohydrates along with natural sugars, so you must be careful indulging in case of sweetened fruit juice. It is suggested to mix fruit with a protein or pre exercise. The fruits can be consumed two to three times in a day serving. There should be a list of vegetables which include are spinach, carrots, broccoli, tomatoes, lettuce, cabbage and cucumbers. We should have three to five servings a day.

Meat, fish, poultry, eggs, peanut butter, cheese, beans, and nuts are best source of protein. Dietitians’ suggest an average human requires about six ounces of protein per day, broken into two to three meals. An ounce can be measure as one table spoon of peanut butter or an egg weighs. Milk and other dairy products due to being high in carbohydrates, their used should be limited. Low-fat milk and unsweetened yogurt will help keep your diabetes in control.

A vegetarian diet, with higher fiber content is better as compared to a non-veggie diet. Carbohydrates & fatty meals need to have a serious check. Exercise helps. Nature’s gifts are the best way to deal with diabetes. Proper medical consultation should be reviewed periodically.

Diabetics usually ask to there physicians; Is it ok with them to consume large quantity of fruits? As a large percentage of people suffering from diabetes either avoids eating fruits or eat very less due to the worries related high sugar content in most fruits. But its natures beauty that blood glucose levels remains ineffective from many fresh fruits.

Good Fruits for Diabetics

As we know fiber rich fruits are generally safe for diabetics to be eaten as they have low glycemic index (GI) and hence do not raise the diabetes sugar level to a higher level as that of fruits with high GI. Fiber has this property to slow down the absorption of sugar into the blood stream. Fruit with edible skin and seeds as such parts are rich in fiber content. Fruits with high fiber content are shown below:

      apples (2.3%) apricots (2.1%) blueberries (8.4%) kiwifruit (2.1%) pomegranates (3.4%)

Fruits high in fructose, and those with high fructose to glucose ratios are also beneficial to diabetics because fructose does not require insulin to metabolize and therefore can be enjoyed by insulin resistant diabetics. apples, pears, guavas and mangoes, – all of which have fructose to glucose ratios

Apple as a edible skin fruit has high fiber content and fructose level in addition raw apple contains high amount of pectin which improves glycemic control in diabetes by reducing need of insulin up to 50%. Grave fruit can also be beneficial for diabetics as it reduce insulin resistance by promoting weight loss when consumed during meals.

Bad Fruits For Diabetics

As most of the fruits contain high glucose content hence need to be taken in small amount to control blood sugar levels as a part of healthy diabetic meal. Example of high sugar fruits are bananas, dates, grapes, water melon and pineapple.

In case of fruit juices the pulpy fibrous part of the fruit is very low hence resulting in high sugar content which should be avoided. Processed fruit juices also contained added sugar and sweeteners more than a carbonated soda which makes them unfit to be consumed by a diabetic.

Canned fruit also tend to be very rich in sugar due to the syrup and therefore should be consumed moderately or drained syrup. Dried fruits comparatively fresh fruits contain higher sugar content.

A person diagnosed with diabetes should take care not only in the amount of simple carbohydrates and complex, but also in the amount of protein and lipids, because diabetes is a disease of the “blood sugar” but this is only a symptom but a disease of the metabolism of other nutrients, the primary responsibility being the lack of insulin.

Less Carbohydrates?

The traditional food plans that require the patient not eat any more food like pasta, bread and potatoes, which came on the market products like noodles and bread for diabetics and gluten-free cookies, among others.

These products have the characteristic of having fewer carbohydrates. But in return, to keep them consistent and similar to the originals, they have additives that contain proteins and lipids, which may endanger the health of your kidneys and arteries.

Recall that these nutrients should also be accounted for in the food of diabetics.

Besides being more expensive, thanks to advances in nutritional research found that the diabetic does not need and can eat so much like the rest of the family.

In the “Consensus guidelines for diabetic food,” organized by the Sociedad Argentina de Diabetes, reaffirmed concepts that match the idea that the person with diabetes does not need to eat special foods, but on the contrary that needs is to learn to eat foods and common food, in a certain order and proportion, depending on your lifestyle, energy needs and personal tastes, harmonizing food when used with insulin and / or with oral hypoglycaemic .

The main idea is to consume all types of food, knowing when, how, how and how often consumed. To some extent, is similar to a healthy eating plan.

Of course it is always essential to consult a professional subject, and to plan food for a diagnosis of diabetes is not a list of prohibitions but rather a set of food arranged in a scientific manner.

Food Plan Recommendations:

The recommendations of the meal plan can be given in the form of fixed menus or tables or by sharing food, a more complex system initially, but provides greater flexibility in the long term. These systems are combined, can provide lists of food exchanges for a fixed menu.

The type of eating plan is very dependent on the characteristics of each person, being an essential adaptation to habitual lifestyle. It must be considered if there is hypertension, dyslipidemia, renal or liver or other processes to make the necessary adjustments in the meal plan.

Insulin Dependent Diabetes Type I

Type I diabetics must strictly respect the schedules of each meal during the day. In turn, these hours are distributed according to the type of insulin and its peak of action. Therefore, it is inadvisable to skip any meal or abruptly change their hours of feeding.

Likewise, total carbohydrates consumed daily recommended, distributed as follows:

      1 / 7 for breakfast
2 / 7 at lunch
1 / 7 at tea
2 / 7 at dinner
1 / 7 collation that will increase the peak action of insulin. (may coincide with any other food supplemented

Insulin Independent Diabetes Type II

Must take special care to evenly distribute the total amount of carbohydrates consumed per day at each meal. Ie, all foods must have an equal amount of carbohydrates.

Food for diabetics suggests:

     Skim milk
No more than three eggs per week.
Defatted meat (poultry without skin, fat-free vaccine, not fried fish).
All kinds of vegetables Group A and B.
A daily serving of vegetables in the group C , or replaced by an equal amount by weight cooked (after cooking) of flour, cereal or pasta.
All kinds of fruit.
Legumes replacing cereals.
Maximum 70 grams of whole grains per serving (size of a well of coffee).
Preferably integral bread and crackers and low fat tenor.
Crude oils.
Sugar-free drinks, low calories. Low-calorie beverages must be consumed in a controlled manner.
Avoid sugar, sweets, candies and kneaded bread or confectionery. (All kinds of food with simple carbohydrates).

Once calculated calorie requirements necessary, we must provide a 55-60% in the form of carbohydrates. In diets for exchange, an exchange of HC is equivalent to 10 g of HC.

Each exchange is an HC amount of food, among other nutrients, contains 10 grams of carbohydrates. For example, in a 2000 kcal diet should be 60% HC (1200 kcal). As each gram of HC provides 4 kcal, 300 g of HC is what we need to generate 1200 kcal. 300g 10 g of HC exchange, involving exchanges of HC 30, which will be distributed throughout the day under the guidance of the specialist and the type of insulin treatment.

Examples of foods that are equivalent to an exchange of HC:

5 g of toasted wheat bread (rusks)
20 g white bread
50 g cooked lentils
200 g broccoli
200 grams of asparagus (large 8-10)
35 g baked potato
35 g of fried potatoes (home)
18 g of commercial potato fried (chips)
75 grams of prunes (2 pieces)
100 g of tangerine (1 piece)
75 g of apple (1 small)
100 g Peach (1 medium)
150 g melon
100 g Orange (1 small)
50 g banana (1 / 2 small)
200 g of cow’s milk
250 g plain yogurt

Common General Recommendations:

I can take sweeteners are used to replace sugar and sweetener have a power much higher than refined sugar. Are the heated cyclamate, aspartame and saccharin. The most recommended of all is aspartame. In general must be the maximum because excessive intake can cause side effects.

The Sorbitol is used in sugarless chewing gum. It is also important to respect its peak to avoid side effects.

Should restrict salt consumption: consumption should be restricted when there is salt hypertension. Diabetes requires no special restrictions on salt content of the diet.

Can I drink alcohol: general recommendations for a person with diabetes does not differ from those recommended for the general population. Absolute abstinence should be advised in cases of pregnancy, pancreatitis, advanced neuropathy, hypertriglyceridemia, or alcohol abuse. If alcohol is the maximum recommended intake of 2 drinks / day for men and 1 drink / day for women. It is believed that one drink contains 15 grams of alcohol.

Alcohol can have a hyper or hypoglycaemic. Depends on the amount of alcohol consumed in a short time and if it is taken with or without food. To avoid the hypoglycemic effect of alcohol are advised to take some food. One should keep in mind that 1 gram of alcohol produces 7 calories are called empty because they have no nutritional value.

Can I rely on special food for diabetics? Generally depends on the composition, and that under this label foods recommended and discouraged. It is important to avoid products labeled them know their carbohydrate content and caloric distribution. In case of doubt it is best to avoid them. The consumption of dietary products for diabetics and should always be controlled, accessed and recommended by a specialist.

The glycemic index (GI) is a new way of measuring the blood sugar response to food intake and, in addition to eliminating some traditional ideas, poses important implications for the sport, diabetes and obesity control.

The IG says the impact of a food to increased blood sugar that occurs. Carbohydrates are, in general, a high GI, compared to other foods, like fats or proteins. But not all carbohydrates are equal: those with a high GI produce a greater increase in sugar and faster, and are, in general, they break down quickly during digestion, such as rice, for example. By contrast, foods such as beans have a relatively low GI, because they decompose more slowly.

But what implications does this have? Firstly, they have had to change some ideas, such as the complex carbohydrates (bread, rice, potatoes, …) produce a gradual increase of sugar, sweets while producing sharp. We now know that some foods rich in starch, like rice, have a high GI produce rapid rises in blood sugar. By contrast, moderate amounts of fresh produce large increases in the latter.

The implications for people with diabetes are very important, but also for the athletes, who now can better estimate what foods to take and when to do so with respect to peak physically demanding, according to their GI.

With regard to obesity, some studies indicate that low-GI foods (eg beans) helps to control feelings of hunger and appetite, producing feelings of satiety. Thus, for weight control is recommended a diet rich in carbohydrates with low glycemic index which normally contain, in addition, low fat, which facilitates more even weight control. And, if possible, avoid high GI carbohydrates such as rice.

Reducing caffeine could help those who suffer the most widespread form of diabetes better control their blood sugar levels, scientists said on Monday.

The supply of caffeine to a small group of people with type 2 diabetes caused their blood glucose levels rise throughout the day, especially after meals, as he has discovered the University Medical Center Duke Durham , North Carolina.

In a telephone interview, James Lane (Duke medical psychologist who led the study) said “Caffeine appears to disrupt glucose metabolism in a way that can be harmful for those suffering from type 2 diabetes.”

The caffeine is found in coffee, tea and many soft drinks.

Diabetes is a situation in which blood glucose levels of the individual are too high. An excess of blood glucose can damage the eyes, kidneys and nerves, and diabetes can also cause heart disease, stroke and amputation.

Type 2 diabetes is the most linked to obesity.

The new findings appear to contradict previous research on diabetes and caffeine. Previous studies showed that those who drank coffee had a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes, and those who drank more coffee had the lowest risk.

Researchers have used a new technology (a tiny glucose monitor embedded under the skin of the abdomen) to evaluate glucose levels of 10 patients, with an average age of 63 years.

The days when the participants received four tablets of caffeine, equivalent to four cups of coffee, their average daily sugar levels rose by 8 percent compared to the days when those same people were four placebo pills, researchers say Published in Diabetes Care.

Dr. Lane said “What we actually show is that when people drink coffee with type 2 diabetes who are regular drinkers of coffee throughout the day there is an increase in glucose than would have if you do not eat caffeine. ”

“This suggests that patients with diabetes should avoid coffee and other caffeinated beverages so that this distortion is not present. Check them easier to keep the glucose level if they avoid caffeine.”

Dr. Lane cited two possible explanations.

“Caffeine can interfere with the process that transports glucose from the blood to muscles and other body cells to use as fuel,” he says. He adds “caffeine also interferes with the release of the hormone adrenaline, which can raise levels of blood sugar.”

Different studies have yielded mixed results regarding the effects of caffeine on health. For example, researchers from the U.S. reported last Monday that pregnant women who drink two or more cups of coffee a day have double the risk of abortion than those who abstain from caffeine. On next day, U.S. researchers reported that caffeine may reduce the chances of women developing ovarian cancer.

The insulin is playing an important role in our body. It converts all the starch and glucose into energy. If the energy is not supplied to our body then there is disorder in the functions of our body and mind. The diabetic occurs due to insufficient flow of insulin and energy conversion. A person with diabetic has to follow certain food habits that are listed as diabetic food grocery list. A diabetic specialist or physicians or dietitian will make a chart of foods for consumption to a person depending on the age and other factors. The daily food should contain carbohydrates, protein and other minerals to the prescribed level. The list of foods may vary from person to person and according to age and sex. The environmental condition will also be considered for assigning food habits. A small amount of saturated food can also be added to the food list. Diabetic low carbohydrate foods are also considered while assigning. More risk is involved in diabetic patient when they consume more contents of carbohydrates. Hence low carb diet is always suggested to diabetic patient.

Food rich in fiber is always suggested to protect the body from diabetic. As the rich fiber foods helps slow digestion, the carbohydrates are fully taken in and the segregation of insulin is utilized for the conversion of energy and hence the insulin is not diverted to the blood vessels. As such the glucose level in the blood is not increased. The formation of sugar contents in the blood is totally avoided. Rich fiber is commonly found in vegetables, fruits, cereals, peas, oats, etc., the chart for rich fiber vegetables, pulses and cereals can be found in nutrient chart. The good diabetic foods list should always be considered for regular consumption. The bad diabetic foods should be avoided once for all. For example raw sugar has low carbohydrate than the refined sugar. Like wise some food materials will have low carb at raw level and high carb level at refined state. Hence before choosing the good diabetic food, the carbohydrate level should be scrutinized.

Foods contain rich fat, alcoholic drinks, foods out of refinery, salted meat, chicken and fish should be avoided totally. Consumption of such food by diabetic patient may cause serious disease like heart attack. It is very common among people to control one self from the habitual aspect is very hard. It may not be possible to stop and avoid all such habits on one day. It may take several days to go with new habits. The reason behind this is a person bound by circumstances and drawn to such diseases at one level and after at least spending half of his life. But it is very essential for such person falls to such disease by circumstances due to uncontrolled and non prevention activities. The earlier the person controls himself from usual food habits or other good and healthy food habits, the better the person gets cured from his diseases. These are the regular diabetic grocery list to be followed and recommended for diabetic patient.

The common disease prevailing all over the world is diabetes. Type 1 and type 2 are classified according to the stage of the diabetic. Type 1 is the stage in which a diabetic patient can avail insulin injection and other treatment. But type 2 is otherwise called mellitus or adult onset diabetes is a stage in which a diabetic patient has glucose in blood with higher volume. There are specifications for foods to eat with type 2 diabetes. As like common people diabetic patient should not take foods of their own choice. Certain limitations are advised and imposed for foods to consume according to the nature and the condition of diabetic status. In olden days people of higher ages was affected with type 2 diabetes. But now even some children are affected with type 2 diabetes. The reason behind such attack on young ones cannot be ascertained fully. There may be chances of attack due to hereditary. In survey conducted at US many people among the diabetes are affected with type 2 diabetes. As insulin injection cannot be put for type2 diabetes, the chances for curing any disease or wound aroused from various problems or factors is very difficult. This type of complications improves bad health situations. The prolonged unhealthy conditions lead to further complications of damaging organs one by one. Hence strict adherence of food habits prescribed for type2 diabetes should be followed.

Certain diabetes foods are recommended to eat by the diabetes regularly for type2 diabetes. Diabetes food plan is also charted out to meet the daily consumption with the calorie intake. In such situation a diabetic patient especially of type2 should know about the diabetic foods to avoid. Strict follow up of the said food procedure a diabetic patient can decrease the level of blood glucose. As the risk factor is more for type2 diabetic patient, the person has to follow the prescribed foods for type2 to eat. Any deviation may cause large amount of complications. As the insulin cannot be injected to a diabetic patient of type2 due to rejection by cells, the segregation or formation of glucose cannot be controlled easily. In this situation the blood glucose cannot be controlled by any means except by diabetes food policy.

Now a days glucose meters can be used by any common people and is easy for access. All precautionary methods are to be taken to prevent diabetes. If diabetes is formed, further shifting to type2 should be totally avoided. The risk of blindness, vascular disorder, disability function of organs and failure of urinal functions are common at the stage of type2 diabetes. Hence the strict adherence of foods to eat for type2 diabetes is very much stressed. The reciprocation on the drugs for diabetic type2 patient is low and hence the intention of drugs is damaged at the initial level. The discharge of hormones to all organs is also affected and the immunization is lowered. The application through insulin or other ways are very much defeated in every angle. Hence the type2 diabetes is framed on dangerous situation. The follow up of foods for type2 diabetic patient is very essential and needed to prolong his life.
